CHICAGO FIRES IN MAY.

Superintendent Bullwinkle furnishes the following report of fires in Chicago during the month of May:

Total number of alarms 73 stills 53, second alarms, 5; second and third combined, 1; and one general alarm. The causes are as follows:

Communicated, 45; sparks from chimneys, 18; false, 12; chimney fires, 10; children with matches, 6; maliciousness, 5; unknown, 5; explosion kerosene lamps, 4; sparks from locomotives, 4 ; defective chimneys, 4; incendiary, 4; carelessness, 3; spontaneous, 3 ; rekindling, 3; boiling over of tar, 2; smoky stoves, 2; overheated chimneys, 2; boys lighting cigars, 2; and one each—sulphur too near broom corn, defective flue, ignition of shavings, ignition of straw, sparks from pipe falling on blankets, oil stoves in draught, bonfire, gas jet in show window, grease on burning hay, sawdust against steam pipes, cigar thrown among rubbish rags in basement, window curtains against gas jet, boiling over of varnish, ignition of curtain from lamps, lightning on wire, grease boiling over on stove, roof near blast furnace, sparks from smoke stack, bursting of tallow tank, boys with fire crackers, defective stove pipes, box on boiler, overheated furnace, tramps, defective furnace, overheated basement, lightning, cigar stub in crack, smoky chimney, and spark on sawdust. Of the buildings, 19 were brick, 108 frames, 5 brick and frame, and were occupied as follows: Dwellings, 48 ; barns, 20 ; buildings with rented rooms, 6; saloons and dwellings, 4; notion stores, 3 ; boarding houses, 2; tenement houses, 2 ; blacksmith shops, 2 ; tailor stores, 2; smelting works, 2; and one each—smoke house, switch house, cooper shop, broom com dry shed, hack shed, jewelry store, loan office, smoke house, lumber dry kiln, lumber yard, school house, meat market, furnished rooms, bakery, offices, confectionery, broom corn storage, cigar store, furniture manufactory, grain storage, tannery, packing house, offices and rented rooms, dry kiln, flour and feed mill, baby carriage and toy manufactory, brass foundry, carriage manufactory, steam engine manufactory, music strings and white lead works. Total insurance ascertainable up to date, $330,524.98. Total loss, $110,403.46. Total loss to insurance so far as settled, $94,584.46.
