Chief Behrens of Charleston Served 46 Years

Chief Louis Behrens, of the Charleston, S. C., fire department celebrated on June 12, the forty-sixth anniversary of his joining the fire department of that city. Chief Behrens became a member of a volunteer fire company in Charleston on January 10, 1876, the paid department being organized in 1881. He was advanced through the various grades until he became assistant chief in 1898 and chief of the department in 1907. Chief Behrens is the only one of 103 men who were members of the paid fire department at its organization still engaged in actual fire fighting. The other man who is still a member is Supervising Engineer Benjamin E. Bicaise, but he no longer responds to the fire alarms.
