Chief Benedict, Batavia, N. Y., Dead
Fire Chief D. Burton Benedict, of Batavia, N. Y., died on the morning of December 30, at the home of his brother at Stafford, at the age of 64, after an illness of two months. He had been in poor health for some time, but his condition was not considered serious until he collapsed while attending a fire on October 23. After this fire he was taken to the farm of his brother at Stafford to recuperate and the end of three months, which was his leave of absence granted by the Batavia Common Council, found him unable to leave. His condition suddenly took a decided turn for the worse and he failed steadily until his death.
Adopt Two-Platoons at Cumberland, Md.—Starting January 1 this year the two platoon system went into effect at the fire department at Cumberland, Md. The firemen will he placed on two shifts at the four engine houses, 15 men on at night and 15 on day. Daily drills will be inaugurated. The department has been operated for the last nineteen years on the single platoon system.
