CHIEF CROKER TO HIS MEN.
Three of the New York fire department captains and six lieutenants have just been made. Their names were taken from the eligible list upon the recommendation of Chief Croker. The new captains and the companies which they will command are: Edward S. Root, engine company No. 18; Benjamin C. Curren, engine company No. 54; and Edward E. Ryan, engine company No. 8. The new lieutenants are Charles Bundrick, engine company No. 7; James Connolly, engine company No. 24; William J. Schuster, engine company No. 11; Charles J. McCartie, engine company No. 9; William H. McCarthy, hook and ladder company No. 10; and John H. Corr, hook and ladder company No. 5.
All of the new officers are young men, and all are on the roll of merit. Before they were assigned to duty Chief Croker summoned them to headquarters and said to them: “You have been promoted to higher grades in the department. Each of you must perform your new duties without fear or favor. Above all, you must be an example of courage and devotion to duty to the men under you at all times. If you do this I will stand by you.”
