Chief McElligott Wants New Apparatus

Fire Commissioner John J. McElligott of the New York Fire Department has asked for the immediate purchase of apparatus costing $443,200, as he said an emergency existed.

According to a recent ruling of Supreme Court Justice Hofstadter, the Fire Department’s specifications for fire apparatus were not broad enough to permit wide competitive bidding. Chief McElligott asked the Board of Aldermen for permission to buy the apparatus without competitive bidding, as an emergency existed which required that the units be purchased before next winter.
