CHIEF PAIGE OUT.

CHIEF PAIGE OUT.

Chief John D. Paige, of the fire department of Joliet, Ill., has been ousted by Mayor Crolius, the newly elected chief executive of that city. He refused either to resign or to quit office in favor of the mayor’s nominee, and at first it seemed as if the council would support him against the new appointee. Chief Sexton. The aldermen, however, confirmed the appointment by a vote of 8 to 4, and thus, alter an almost absolute reign of fourteen years, his place in the city’s fire department knows him no more. Former Chief Paige was a man of very original ideas, which not infrequently betrayed him into eccentricities in speech and action. Of his sincerity, however, in saying and doing what in his opinion was the best for the interests of firemen and fire protection there could be no doubt.
