Chief Speddy of Lakewood, Ohio, Injured
Chief J. H. Speddy of the fire department of Lakewood, Ohio, met with a painful injury on August 21, when his department went to the assistance of firemen of Rocky River, Ohio, in answer to a call for help from Mayor Carl Stein of that town. Chief Speddy responded with engine company No. 1 and on arrival found that a field fire had gotten the best of the Rocky River department. It was very dark when they arrived at Rocky River and it was necessary in order to get at the field that was on fire to pass over another about a thousand feet broad. Chief Speddy was the first man to cross the field and stumbled into a deep ravine covered with brush, falling ten feet. In falling he struck heavily on his foot and dislocated some of the bones. He was taken to the hospital in his own car and it is feared it will be some time before he will be able to walk on the injured member. The fire was extinguished without any loss.
