Christmas Garlands Carry Fire from Store to Store

The evergreen Christmas garlands which merchants in Richland Center, Wis, had strung from store to store became blazing chains which spread a fire from a variety store through a large portion of the business district.

A man was trapped in one of the stores and burned to death. The fire caused damage estimated at $80,000 and raged out of control several hours after it was discovered.

It started in the variety store and, racing along the festooned decorations, destroyed a drug store, shoe repair shop, tire store and a doctors’ office.
