Civil Service at Detroit

Is the fire commission “playing horse” with civil service regulations? is what the Detroit, Mich., Civil Service Commissioners want to know. The matter was brought up at a recent meeting of the commissioners. It seems that the fire commission has been rejecting men who had successfully passed civil service examinations and who had been sent to the department to fill vacancies. “If a man we sent to the fire department had a scar on his face or a pimple on his ear the department rejected him,” said Civil Service Commissioner May. “If the way he combs his haid didn’t please the fire commissioners they rejected him despite the fact that he had proven his qualifications in a civil service examination. We are going to find out whether or not the fire department is trying to ‘play horse’ with civil service regulations.”
