Cleveland (OH) Fire Department Wants Sick Notes from Firefighters

The Cleveland (OH) Fire Department is demanding doctor’s excuses or other documentation from firefighters who go home sick during their work shifts.

A report from The Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/tY4FLw) indicates that this comes in response to a rder is intended to combat a dramatic increase in mid-shift illnesses that has purportedly resulted in 14,000 hours of lost time each of the last two years.

The Cleveland Fire Fighters Association has filed a grievance, specifying that this punishes firefighters for a benefit guaranteed in their union contract.

The policy comes during a city investigation into possible firefighter payroll abuses and concern about fire department overtime spending.
