CONTINENTAL HOSE AND SUCTION EXPANDER.
The accompanying illustration is that of a hose and suction-expander of the Ahrens Fire Engine company, of Cincinnati, Ohio. This useful appliance is a high-grade tool for attaching couplings to suctions and other large hose where inside diameters range from 3 1/2 ins. upwards to 6 ins. inclusive. It has adjustable gauge and automatic releases; is compact and convenient; and successfully overcomes the objectionable features of the rougher class of expanders. Quoting. on this tool, the price of the expander is given separately. The expanding segments are interchangeable, and any one or more sizes within the range of the tool can be furnished at any time. The inside diameters of expanding segments are 3 1/2, 4 4 ½, 5, 5½ and 6 ins. When writing, always give the inside diameters of the hose for which segments are wanted. The above company has now in preparation a new catalogue of the “Continental” engine, which it is intended to place in the hands of everyone interested in steam fire engines. Corrected mailing lists and names are now being arranged, so that the catalogue may be sent to those that have forwarded their names and correct addresses for registration. The new plant of the company and the development of tne “Continental” have led to the introduction of improved tools, and a highclass tool department is maintained, so that excellent service in anything which is peculiar to the needs of a fire-department repair shop is always at the service of those needing good and expeditious work-. Superior tools are always interesting to those who have to do with the keeping of a fire department, so that the company solicits correspondence relative to any special devices where work is most arduous, owing to lack of suitable appliances. The Ahrens company has made the following recent sales; Louisville. Ky„ second-size Continental—third order for Continental from this city; Los Angeles, Cal., fourth-size Continental; Toledo, Ohio, two second size engines; Roanoke, Va., one first-size engine. Four second size Continental engines are tinder construction for Chicago and will soon be ready for delivery.
On September iq the Chicago fire department enjoyed a long rest, because it had no work to do. For more than forty hours up to noon on that day the records of the department were blank. It was announced at fire headquarters that the day was a “record breaker,” no other instance of so long a period of inactivity having been recorded. Had it not been for the lightning on that night and early on Wednesday morning, the period would have been extended many more hours.
