CONTRACT FOR LAST CROTON DAM.

The last of all the great Croton dams is now to be built, the Croton Falls dam, involving an expenditure of $3,000,000. Last week it was let out for building by contract to Malloy Brothers. Their bid was $3,028,000. It was not the lowest bid, but Ashbel Vermilyea, who bid $2,817,000, had no plant, and the Croton aqueduct commission refused to give him the contract. The new dam at Croton Falls, in the vicinity of the Cross river dam and the big Croton dam will have a capacity of 14.000.000,000 gals, of water. The contractors will have thirty-two months in which to complete the work. The new dam is in the towns of Carmel and Southeast, in Putnam county. and in Somers. Westchester county. Commissioners of appraisal are to lie named in September. one from New York county, one from Putnam and one from Westchester, to appraise the compensation to be made to owners.
