Convention of North Carolina Firemen
The thirty-sixth annual convention of the North Carolina State Firemen’s Association met at Durham, N. C., on August 7 and continued until August 9, there being some two hundred members of the association in attendance. The memorial service was held on the evening of Wednesday, August 8, the address being by Dr. Harold D. Meyer of the State University. The invocation was by Rev. Trela D. Collins, pastor of the Temple Baptist church. One of the principal addresses was by Insurance Commissioner Stacy W. Wade, who emphasized the lessons of the New Bern fire.
On August 9 a tournament was held. Races were the feature, sixteen towns being represented in them. High Point is said to have established a world’s record in a water contest, the team making the run succeeding in getting water to the hose in nine seconds. Other contests were a grab reel, motor races, chemical tests, etc. A luncheon was served at noon, R. L. Lindsay, vice-president of the Durham Public Service Company being toastmaster. Sherwood Brockwell, assistant insurance commissioner, made an address and Chief Frank Bennett, of Durham, sang several songs. J. L. Foister, of Chapel Hill, was elected president of the association.
