Convention of Wisconsin Firemen
The Tenth Annual Convention of the Wisconsin Paid Firemen’s Association was held in Marinette, Wis., August 3, 4 and 5. The meeting was called to order by President Clarence E. Gillen, of Racine, and the address of welcome was made by the Honorable Joseph Fisher, Mayor of Marinette. The meeting was very successful from a business standpoint, with about seventy delegates in attendance. The following topics were discussed: “How Can We Develop Our Association to the Highest Plane of Usefulness and Efficiency,” by Assistant Chief L. A. Hanlon, of Milwaukee, and Assistant Chief Terrence Doonen, of Wausau. “Automatic Sprinklers and Their Value in Connection with the Work of the Fire Department at Fires,” by J. J. Whitty, Oshkosh. “The Most Practical Method for Obtaining Better Working Conditions and Shorter Hours for Firemen,” by Chief James P. Welsh, of Eau Claire, and Chief Wm. A. Trotter, of Sheboygan. “What Equipment Should Be Carried on Auxiliary Squads to Facilitate the Work at Fires and for the Care of Persons Injured or Overcome by Smoke, by Chief Olaf Johnson, Superior. “Does the Fire Prevention Work, Now Being Conducted by the Fire Departments of the State, Bring Practical Results?” by Captain Chas. Schunk, Fire Prevention Squad, Milwaukee, Edw. W. Marshall, Ashland, and Engineer James E. Gibson, La Crosse. “Fire Department Problems in the Smaller Cities of the State,” by Joseph Cox, Secretary, Fire Department, Neenah. J. E. Florin, Superintendent of Inspection for the State Fire Marshal’s office, spoke on Fire Prevention, and S. J. Williams, Inspector for the Industrial Commission, delivered an address on Building Construction and the Operation of the State Building Code. The memorial services were held at the Moose Hall and the Memorial Address was delivered by Rev. Kamm. W. A. Jacobs, of Sheboygan, was elected President: Joseph Cox, of Neenah, Vice-President; Ole Norman, Superior, Secretary, and John H. Kratz, Manitowoc, Treasurer. Sheboygan was selected as the next meeting place. The Executive Committee selected are James Butler, Milwaukee; Chas. F. Hennesy, Milwaukee, and John H. Kratz, Manitowoc. “The delegates were well entertained and the local committee, Chief Hodgins, Asst. Chief Dukett and Otto Hackbarth deserve a great deal of credit for making the convention a success,” said Secretary Ole Norman.
