To Estimate Water Pressure Mentally.

To the Editor: Dear Sir—To find water pressure required at an engine or hydrant to give the desired nozzle pressure when using 2 1/2-inch cotton rubber lined fire hose, divide chosen nozzle pressure by factor given below and then multiply by the number of the pieces of hose in the line; to this add the nozzle pressure, also two or three pounds as an extra average friction loss:

Example: 40 lbs. N. P. 300 ft. hose, 1 1/4-inch nozzle. 40 divided by 4 equals 10, multiplied by 6 equals 60; plus 40 equals 100; plus 2 equals 102 lbs. For each 2 1/3 ft. elevation add one pound.
