COST OF FIRE PROTECTION IN NEW YORK
Fire Commissioner Sturgis estimates that an increase of $1, 118,932 will be required for his depart ment next year. He asks the board of estimate and apportionment for $6,539,035. Commissioner Sturgis asks for an increase of $516,100 for additional apparatus and maintenance in Manhattan, the Bronx, and Richmond, and an increase of $394,500 for the same purposes in Brooklyn and Queens. Me asks also for an increase of $49,800 for the volunteer system in Richmond and for $70,600 for the same purpose in Queens. These two items will probably be reduced by Comptroler Grout, who is opposed to public appropriations for volunteer firemen. The balance of the increase is to he devoted to the salaries of the uniformed force. The headquarters fund is increased from $88,655 to $105,100. This is due to legislation providing for one deputy chief of the department and for three additional battalion chiefs. The total salary list for 1904 will be $5,228,904, of which $4,016,441 goes to Manhattan, the Bronx, and Richmond, and $2,212461 to Brooklyn and Queens.
