Crude Oil Plant at the Fair.
Attention of underwriters has recently been attracted to the power plant adjacent to machinery hall at the World’s Fair grounds because of the discovery that the feed pipes supplying the crude petroleum for fuel were nearly on a level, and not as the rules of the Chicage Fire Underwriters Association require, so arranged as to drain toward the tanks. This defect was discovered two weeks ago when the conveying pipe was being tested, the heat from a parallel steam pipe expanding an elbow-joint and causing the conveyor to leak. It was then found that the conveyor was placed nearly on a level. This error in construction, however, will be remedied immediately by laying a new main pipe for regular use, with an incline toward the tanks, and having a lever valve outside about ten feet from the boiler. The present supply pipe will be auxiliary, and will be furnished with a second stand-pipe near the boiler-house, which will carry oil above the highest point used by the boilers. When the pump is stopped the oil will at once cease flowing. Cut-offs, the same as in the main pipe, will also be furnished. In front of each pair.of boilers, electric signals connecting with the pump-house have been arranged, so that each fireman can order the flow of oil stopped when necessary. On signal also the pumps can be reversed, so as to suck the oil back from either pipe.
