Officials are reporting continuing glitches with Shelton (CT) firefighters’ aging radios, including problems reaching a rescue boat during last week’s search for a missing boater and the attempt to contact two firefighters inside the local high school during a false alarm call.
Neither incident was significant enough to warrant an official report, the fire department spokesman told a reporter for ctpost.com (http://bit.ly/vkUHQI).
The department has applied for a FEMA grant to upgrade its radio system, but the spokesman says the department is skeptical about getting the funds.
The radio failures raise significant concerns over firefighter safety. The department has previously reported difficulties with its radio system, including a period in 2009 in which console at the police department that controls the fire department’s radio system failed several times.
