Rank-and-file D.C. firefighters didn’t show up at Chief Kenneth Ellerbe’s second State of the Department speech Wednesday night in what one media outlet characterized as a “silent protest” of the chief and his policies.
ABC7 reported (http://wj.la/12kFP2Q) that it did not see any of the more than 2,000 rank-and-file department members in attendance at the event. At last year’s speech, members walked out on Ellerbe.
Sources told reporters that members are upset about his proposal to move from 24 to 12-hour shifts and another plan to redeploy some overnight EMS resources to other shifts. The chief believes these moves will save money and lives.
