Dangerous Fire Escapes.
And now the Oil City Derrick has to have its fling at fire-escapes. And this is what the Derrick is wicked enough to say: “The Ohio House of Representatives passed a bill requiring proprietors of hotels and boarding houses to keep on hand a supply of fireescapes for the use of guests. Here’s another outrage against life, liberty and the pursuit of old age. Statistics show that a fire-escape is more dangerous than a can of nitro-glycerine. Men have been known to handle nitro-glycerine for fifteen years. No agent for the fireescape has yet been found who could retain his rotundity of form against the flattening influences of American pavements for a period of more than two weeks. If the Ohio Legislature would like to astonish the people of that state with a popular law, let them require proprietors of boarding houses to provide something for guests to eat besides dried apples and sorghum molasses.”
