Day Off Granted to Firemen
The City Council of Charlotte, N. C., didn’t see its way clear to buy a new fire truck for the city fire department, so it voted $11,000 to do something else for Chief Hendrix Palmer’s boys. A dozen new firemen will be added and with this addition the fire fighters will enjoy a day off every two weeks. Of course, the $11,000 would not carry on this work indefinitely, but the council appropriated $11,000 as an entering wedge to get the idea off to a good start. At his own request. Chief Palmer had himself excluded from the daysoff privilege, giving his share of inactivity to the “smoke-eaters” under him. In the near future Charlotte City Council will get around to buying Chief Palmer and his men a new truck, which is badly needed in a growing city.
