Washington, D.C. – The United States Fire Administration (USFA) is encouraging fire departments to complete and submit their on-line applications for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program by the deadline of 5:00 p.m. EST, today, Friday, April 5, 2002.
USFA, a part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), reported that as of the close of business on April 3, nearly 13,000 applications had been submitted. However, this equals only about half of the applications that had been started by fire departments. Paper applications were due by close of business April 1.
A series of panels in late April and early May will review the applications and make recommendations to FEMA on grant awards. All fire departments will be notified of final action on their grant applications.
The technical assistance center will start new hours on Saturday April 6. The hours for Saturday April 6 will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. Thereafter, the hours will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT. The technical assistance center will continue to provide service to departments that received awards in 2001 and maintain contact with 2002 applicants.
More information on the grant program is available from the USFA Web site at www.usfa.fema.gov/grants, the Grant Program Office’s toll-free information line at 866-274-0960, or e-mail at email@example.com.
