The Deltona Fire Fighters Foundation in cooperation with the Deltona Fire Department hosted a seminar this past week bringing the importance of cancer awareness to local fire fighters. Firefighters from the Deltona Fire Department and several neighboring fire departments attended the three hour seminar presented over a three day period. The seminar was presented by The Firefighter Cancer Support Network.
The FCSN was founded in 2005 and is a not for profit support network of cancer survivors, care givers and volunteers. Their objective is to provide timely support to fire department employees and their family members when diagnosed with any form of cancer. The FCSN has grown worldwide operating from donations as their volunteers provide comfort, strength and awareness.
Cancer is becoming the leading cause of death to fire fighters overtaking cardiac disease and heart attacks. The FCSN is trying to bring awareness through their program and change the ways in which fire departments operate on a daily basis by improving or implementing new concepts and ideas such as systems designed to remove diesel fumes from the engine bays by utilizing air evacuation systems and advanced air filtration systems as well as promoting the use of self-contained breathing apparatus during the salvage and overhaul stage of fires.
