Demonstration of Firemen at Reading.
The gathering of firemen at Reading, Pa., on Labor Day, gives promise of ranking among the great demonstrations of firemen. Preparations are so far along as to insure that all will be in readiness to entertain the numbers that are now confidently expected. One estimate has placed the probable number of men in line as high as 12,000, and that the number will not fall below 8,000 is confidently expected. Pennsylvania, of course, will furnish the largest quota of companies, but acceptances have been received from New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and even Connecticut. Some trying problems are reported to have arisen with respect IO providing sleeping and eating accommodations, hut the local committee gives assurance that these necessities will surely be supplied.
