Des Moines Water Supply.

Des Moines Water Supply.

The report of the National Board of Underwriters upon the water supply of Des Moines, Iowa, so far as regards its possibilities in the way of firefighting facilities, is as follows:

Water Supply.— Works owned and operated by the Des Moines Water company, a private corporation. Organisation and management good. Supply from Raccoon river from filter galleries, capacity not known, and pumped direct to the distribution system in one service with one standpipe as an equaliser. Reserve pumping capacity inadequate. Station non-fireproof; protection only fair. Per-capita consumption very low. Pressures vary from good to very light, but are well maintained; sufficient for the operation of sprinkler-equipments in manufacturing and important mercantile districts. Main arteries too small, but with the contemplated additions will be sufficient; secondary feeders are lacking, except in the congested-value district. Fifty-four per cent, of the total length of mains are 8 in. in diameter—-a very good feature; dead end and long lines with no cross-connections numerous. Gate-valves in fair to good condition; spacing from good to poor; inspected annually. Hydrants in only fair condition and of unsatisfactory type; spacing good to fair.
