Display has Strong Impact

A realistic fire scene added emphasis to the Boardman Fire Department’s message to visitors at its annual Fire Prevention Week awareness display. Members of the department constructed a room typical of one that had been ravaged by fire.

Utilizing items taken from actual fire scenes, the fire fighters were able to explain burning patterns, the devastation of smoke and heat damage, and the personal tragedy of losing family heirlooms. This vivid illustration prompted many questions from adults and children alike, giving fire fighters the opportunity to tell their story of fire suppression and fire prevention.

The display, which graphically illustrated fire’s effects, was built at minimal cost. It consisted of 2 x 4 framing covered with drywall material. The charring effect was done with an acetylene torch. Household items selected from fire scenes created a picture of authenticity. Red floodlights added a glow to the room.

According to Assistant Chief J.B. deSaulles, comments from those visiting the display indicated it had a strong impact on them.
