Donaldsonville Volunteer Firemen Threaten to Disband

The New Orleans Picayune states that the water commissioners of Donaldsonville, La., have notified the Volunteer Hose Company that in future it will be charged for all electricity consumed on its premises, except what is required for the two lights in the apparatus room. The company, in return, has notified the water commissioners that unless all power consumed on its premises is furnished tree of charge by the commission the organization will disband as a volunteer company and tender its apparatus to the city. The company states that a shower bath for use after return from fires, and other necessities, have been installed on the place, and that, while the building is not, strictly speaking, used only on occasions of fire, the purpose of all gatherings there is to foster the volunteer fireman’s spirit. Inasmuch as the men endanger their lives and do all in their power to protect lives and property, they claim that they are entitled to free electricity, and unless they get it they will disband.
