DROVE TO THE FIRE HALF-CLAD.
At Schenectady, N. Y., Stephen Van Vranken, change driver of one of the hook and ladder trucks in the local fire department, recently drove to a fire clad only in his undergarments. He was dressing when the alarm was turned in and leaped to his truck, driving about half a mile through the streets with the thermometer registering four degrees below zero. He nearly came up in zeal to the driver in the Newark, N. J., fire department, who was taking a hot bath when the alarm was turned in on a zero night a few weeks ago, and, non-accoutered as he was, plunged down the brass pole to the driver’s seat with only a rubber coat on him to cover his Adamitic condition. He and Driver Von Vranken make a “noble pair of brothers.”
