ECONOMY AT LOS ANGELES.

ECONOMY AT LOS ANGELES.

At Los Angeles, Cal., in consequence of the city’s “financial embarrassments,” two engine companies have been disbanded, so as to admit of the pay of the other firemen not being reduced. Chief Lips, also, in order to better the men, refused to use the appropriation of $450 voted him, in order that he might attend the convention of the International Association of Fire Engineers at Washington. He said he felt he ought to remain in Los Angeles and work for the success of the bond issue for the fire department. He, therefore, asked that the money appropriated for his trip be placed in the Firemen’s Relief fund, or in the fund for the fire department. The council, however, decided that it had no power to make such a transfer, and that its proper action would be to simply rescind its action making the appropriation, thus retaining the money in the city’s general fund.

Under the mistaken idea that a fire-alarm box at Portland, Ore, was a receptacle for letters, an unknown, but “loving Mary” opened the box and carefully inserted a souvenir postcard, with a view of Mount Hood on it, for transmission. In doing so. the swain’s “own loving Mary” caused an alarm to be turned in. to which the acting chief.

the fireboat. an engine, a hose wagon, a truck and a chemical engine responded. The only sign of a blaze that was found was that of the fires of love, as expressed on the postal. It was duly mailed by a fireman expressly detailed by the chief for that purpose. Under the interesting circumstanccs, none of the firemen said things.
