Electrical Safety Tip

Firemen hang a sign identifying a Host Program fire station information center.

If you just can’t resist touching electrical equipment that you suspect is charged with electricity on the outside, put only the back of your hand on it. When you touch electric motors, boxes or conduits this way, you can still pull your hand away when your muscle reflexes make a fist. But if you touch the equipment with your palm, the reflex action may force your hand into a firm grip of the hot object, freezing you to what may be a fatal mistake. If you are smart, you will use a line tester to determine whether equipment is charged. Better yet, disconnect the circuit and call an electrician.
