ELGIN WATER PURE.
The State survey has reported that the water as supplied to Elgin, Ill., is sufficiently wholesome for drinking and domestic purposes, even although its composition is half artesian and half river. The report says: “The water contains higher oxygen consumed and nitrogen as nitrates than usual. The small number of bacteria and the absence of the colon bacillus would indicate that it is perfectly safe to be used for drinking purposes. Al the water of the city is passed through 6 ft. of white sand and is perfectly filtered before being distributed. Fully 4,000,000 gals, are distributed daily. The report of the last analysis shows the following condition: Turbidity, none; odor, none; chlorine in chlorides, 3.5: oxygen consumed, 7.35; nitrogen as free ammonia, 08: nitrogen as albuminoid ammonia, .280: nitrogen as nitrites, .014; nitrogen as nitrates, .48; alkalinity, 230.8.
