Extensions at Davenport.
The Davenport, Ia., Water company has recently done a great deal in the line of construction and extension of its system. It has completed the taking up of 4,000 ft. of 6-in. pipe on Third street from Rock Island street to Warren street and put in its place, 16-in. main pipe. It has also taken out the old fire hydrants along this line of pipe and set larger ones. The fire protection has thus been greatly improved, and the pipe-distribution in the business section of the city is now all that could be desired. The consumers along the line of Third street had to be supplied with water while the work was done, and all service pipes connected up with the new main at the company’s expense. The water service was given the consumers by connecting up a small pipe with the fire hydrants and running laterals from it into all the buildings where the construction work was under way. Since April, of this year, the company has laid 6,300 ft. of main on thirteen streets, and will lay, in addition, 4,650 ft. in eleven streets, and will lay more in other streets.
