Extensive Addition to Beloit Foundry
Fairbanks, Morse & Co., manufacturers of pumping machinery, etc., have perfected plans for beginning, early next year, an addition to their plant. When completed, the entire structure, which will be erected in Beloit, Wis., is to cover 11 acres. The structure is to be 900 feet long and 550 feet wide, and will contain 495,000 square feet of floor space. This large factory will have a capacity, when completed, of 350 to 400 tons of gray iron daily, and ultimately expects to employ 3,000 additional men. As the plant at present employs about 4,000, this plan provides for a total force of 7,000 employes, including all departments. No figures have as yet been given out, but it is believed that the cost of the improvement will reach, at least, $1,500,000. Every provision has been made in the plans, not only for efficiency in handling the manufacturing end, but also for the furnishing of means for keeping the workmen in a highly efficient physical condition. A system of hot and cold shower baths for their use after work hours, individual lockers so that they can change from street clothes to working, a cafeteria where they can get meals practically at cost, and a complete ventilating system that will change the air frequently throughout the factory building, are among the features.
