False Alarm Used as Decoy by Thieves
It is said that several times lately false alarms have been pulled in New York City by hold up thieves who took advantage of the temporary absence of the patrolman for the purpose of investigating the fire, to rob stores or persons in the vicinity of his beat. In one such case recently, while the policeman was hastening to the box at the sound of the engines, five men held up a shopkeeper, threatening to shoot if he made an outcry. He called for help, however, and the men ran out of the shop.
The double-platoon system has been put into effect in Fort Worth, Tex., at some stations and will be extended to all as soon as possible. An increase in the force is necessary before the system can become fully operative.
