FDIC Opens March 27 in Kansas City
With a program keyed to training and fire fighting, the 45th annual Fire Department Instructors Conference will be held at Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday, March 27, through Friday, March 30. Prior to the FDIC, there will be meetings of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors March 24-26.
The FDIC program features two high rise talks, one by Raymond McGill, chief training officer of the Atlanta, Ga., Fire Department on “Atlanta High Rise Tests” and the other by Chet Schirmer of Schirmer Engineering on “High Rise Fire Protection.”
Donald M. O’Brien, general manager of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, will discuss “Training the Future Fire Chief” and Charles Getz will describe “Ohio’s Required 160-Hour Training Program.” The problems of “Fire Fighting Tactics for Rack Storage and High Piled Stock” will be explained by Jack S. Barritt, an engineer with the Factory Insurance Association.
Other program features include a talk by Chief Derek Jackson of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on “Emergency Ambulance Service” and a discussion of “Management in the Fire Service” by Chief David Gratz of Silver Spring, Md.
In addition to the talks at the general sessions in the Municipal Auditorium, workshop programs will be conducted on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. The industrial-municipal, administration, fire prevention, government and military, training, rural and small departments, and fire department use of water supplies workshops will all repeat their Wednesday afternoon programs on Thursday so that those attending the conference can take in two complete workshops of their choice.
The training workshop will be conducted by the International Society of Fire Service Instructors and will be in four sections; volunteer departments, paid departments, college level training and metropolitan departments.
The ISFSI meetings will start on Saturday, March 24, with an all-day meeting of the board of directors. The Sunday meeting for all members will be divided into three groups: county and municipal training officers, state training instructors, and state training directors. Monday will be devoted to the annual meeting of the society. There will be reports on progress made toward national certification of fire service officers, instructors, fire investigators and fire fighters. This session will also work on changes in the society’s constitution and bylaws and conduct the annual election of officers.
For the first time, there will be a $10 registration fee for the FDIC this year. Registrations for the conference will be handled at the Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 25, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and at the Municipal Auditorium prior to and during the conference sessions.
