Federal Death Benefits
A bill authorizing the payment of $50,000 death benefits to survivors of certain fire fighters and public safety officers who die in the line of duty has been passed by the United States House of Representatives. In its action on April 24, the House amended a bill passed by the Senate, S. 15, to contain the language of H.R. 11321.
The bill provides that death benefits shall be paid when a fire fighter or public safety officer dies as the result of a “criminal act or an apparent criminal act.” Widows and children are the primary recipients of the benefits, but if there is none, then dependent parents may qualify for the awards.
