FILTERED WATER FOR WEST PHILADELPHIA.
Filtered water is now supplied to all of West Philadelphia, according to a statement issued recently by Major Gillette. This time last year Major Gillette said that West Philadelphia would have a filtered water supply by the following January, and the major has just given the principal reasons for the delay. Summarised, these reasons are that the consumption has increased very materially since this time last year; that the settling reservoir at the filter plant did not clarify the water quickly enough to permit its use before it had passed through the preliminary filters; and, finally, that a mistake had been made in setting the registers at the filters. The statement said that the daily waste of filtered water had been reduced about 5.000,000 gallons since July last. The work of completing the preliminary filters will begin next month. These filters were about three-quarters complete when the contract of D. J. McNichol was annulled.
