Fire Apparatus Wanted in Amoy
According to Consul Clarence E. Gauss, of Amoy, China, a resolution was adopted instructing the municipal council to acquire a suitable fire engine and fire-fighting apparatus for use in the settlement. The international settlement of Kulangsu, Amoy, is on the island of Kulangsu, in Amoy Harbor, with a foreign population of about 290 and a Chinese population of something over 10,000. There are about 150 to 200 foreign style two-story dwelling houses, one large hospital, and several warehouses, besides the three distinct Chinese villages housing the poorer Chinese population. Many Chinese of means occupy foreign-style houses. A system of roads has been laid out over the island, but as the island is but a series of rocky hills, there are some heavy grades. The water supply is derived entirely from surface wells, and is wholly inadequate, especially in the dry season; so that for lack of water supply, a chemical fire apparatus would be the only thing suitable for the island. The municipality is not in a position to buy an elaborate engine and equipment, but should American manufacturers or agents be interested in the introduction of their apparatus in Amoy, it is suggested that they might communicate with the chairman, Kulangsu Municipal Council, Kulangsu, Amoy, China, submitting detailed information, plans and prices for an adequate chemical fire-fighting apparatus.
