FIRE COMMISSIONER STURGIS.
IN Mr. Thomas Sturgis, Mayor-Elect Low will have a fire commissioner who brings to his work not only thoroughly tried business ability, but also rare conscientiousness and that proper spirit of selfsacriflce which prompts him to give himself up altogether to doing his whole duty in that official and responsible position to which he has been called. Mr. Sturgis is no Btranger to the work of a fire commissioner. In the days of the Stroug administration he served a long apprenticeship as one of the old city’s fire board, and gave general satisfaction all ronnd. Besides these advantages, Mr. Sturgis, from his intimate connection with the building trade, will import into the office an Additional qualification, and one which, considering how intimately the fire, tenement house, aud building commissioners are now connected under the new charter, caunot but work advantageously to the benefit of all three. Taking every qnalificatlon into consideration, therefore, the military trainiug, the practical fire knowledge already obtained, his knowledge of building, bis experience in business, and his sterling integrity, we cannot bat heartily congratulate the fire department on its new commissioner.
