Fire Danger to San Francisco.
At San Francisco, Cal., Chief Shaughnessy has appealed to the Downtown association of the city for aid in preventing the passage of a new building ordinance, which threatens to expose the city to another conflagration. He says: “San Francisco has the smallest fire limits of any city of its size in the United States, and it is estimated that 90 per cent, of the buildings are frame and 10 per cent, brick or concrete. From this you will realise how hard it is for the department to fight fires. Now it is proposed to modify the building laws in that district west of Powell to the fire limits and cover the whole section, so that buildings, practically frame, may be erected. This, to my idea, would be a very unwise step to take, as a fire in this section would expose the entire city. The winds are blowing, practically, all the year round from the west, which would drive the flames right into the heart of the city. I appeal to you men who have large mercantile interests at stake to assist me to prevent the passing of this new ordinance.”
