Fire Department Provides Water Service
During the severe cold spell the past winter, many residents of Staten Island, part of New York City, found themselves without water when a 20-inch water main broke. A tank wagen, such as is used by the Department of Sanitation for cleaning streets, and which has been used by the New York Fire Department for fighting brush fires on the island, was used to supply water service to homes without water.

Deputy Chief Spencer sent the tank car to the district affected by the break. A small pipe was fitted to the tank so that residents could fill pails and other water containers with an emergency supply until repairs could be made to the main.
