Fire Destroys Washington Lumber Yard
A fire of unknown origin destroyed the W. A. Pierce lumber yard on Rhodes Avenue, Washington, D. C., recently. On the arrival of Chief George S. Watson of the fire department, the fire had assumed such threatening proportions that a general alarm was sent out calling practically all of the apparatus of the city. Owing to the inflammable nature of the contents and the time which elapsed before the alarm was given there was little hope of saving the lumber, which was all destroyed, together with the stable and outhouses of the company. Twenty-six horses also perished in the stables before they could be gotten out by the employees. The damage was estimated at $500,000.
