FIRE ENGINES SALES.
The American-LaFrance Fire Engine company considers its recent California steam fire engine sales to be a great vindication of the merits of its Metropolitan engine. It will doubtless be recalled that two competitive tests of steam fire engines were held in California last winterone at Napa in December, the other at Los Angeles in January. Although the Metropolitan engine was plainly the winner of these competitive tests, it was not purchased in either case. Since these tests the American-LaFrance Fire Engine company has made the following sales of Metropolitan engines: To Santa Rosa, ten or twelve miles from Napa; two of its engines to San Francisco; a third-size Metropolitan to Long Beach, a flourishing seaside city twenty miles from Los Angeles; and, last but not least, it has pust been awarded a contract for three third-size Metropolitan engines by Los Angeles, which has had exceptional opportunities for passing judgment on the steam fire engine question. The AmericanLaF’rance Fire Engine company feels that these recent sales, all but one of them in cities which have had its engines in service many years, are encouraging evidence that its Metropolitan engine stands the test of actual service conditions.
