Fire Fans Convene in Chicago

Visiting fire fans who held their Third Annual Convention in Chicago.

More than one hundred Visiting Fire Fans from all over the nation met in Chicago on July 1st and 2nd for their third annual convention. Members of the International Fire Buff Associates, the fans wound up their meeting with a tour of the Chicago Fire Department, including a visit to the quarters of Eng. Co. 1 and Eng. Co. 89, lunch at Insurance Patrol 5, a trip on the Fireboat Joseph Medill, and a visit to the Main Fire Alarm Office. Even in their spare time, they were able to monitor fire calls being transmitted from Chicago’s Main Fire Alarm Office by means of radio equipment supplied by Motorola.

The Convention was held at the Sherman Hotel and was climaxed by a banquet at which Albert H. Petersen, Chief Fire Marshal of the City of Chicago, was guest speaker. Also attending were Chief Edward E. Wischer, Chief of the Milwaukee Fire Department, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William J. Gorman, Fire Dept. Chaplain, Dr. Harold P. Sullivan, Fire Dept. Surgeon, Thomas Powers, Second Deputy Chief Fire Marshal, James Lahey, Drillmaster, and John Haberkorn, Chief Fire Marshal, Chicago Fire Dept., Retired. Among the cities represented by the various fans were Detroit, Cincinnati, Boston, Dallas. Bay City, Michigan. Baltimore, New York, Chicago and Hillside, New Jersey.
