Fire Marshal Urges Clean-Up

Fire Marshal E. M. Naylor, of Dallas, Tex., has urged the people of that city to devote special attention to the elimination of unnecessary fire hazards. He has issued the following statement which contains general suggestions as to some of the best methods of preventing fires:

“In the matter of individual business men reducing the cost of their insurance there are very few rules or conditions applicable to all lines of business, but there is hardly a single business establishment that can not improve some condition on the premises, eliminate or lessen some fire hazard, which will operate as a credit, thereby reducing the rate applicable to that particular business. Each proprietor or manager of a business house can see that his private fire-fighting and fire-prevention equipment is standard and that it is always in condition for use at a moment’s notice. This applies to fire plugs, hose, hand extinguishers. etc He can also sec that all electrical installations and equipment arc safe and in proper working order. Metal containers for trash and rubbish should be provided, emptied promptly and kept closed. Property owners can properly house and safeguard all combustible goods or material, provide fire doors with fuseablc links and see that doors are never locked. Private watchmen systems also reduce rates. Improve conditions, eliminate fire hazards and get reductions where possible. Agents can tell you how. These things are plain common business sense and duty, particularly so under present conditions, when it is necessary to conserve in every manner possible. Fire, while a necessity to the human race, is one of its greatest foes.”
