FIRE MENACE IN IOWA SMALLER, TRACY SAYS
The fire menace in Iowa is decreasing, J. A. Tracy, State Fire Marshal, believes. “There is a noticeable decline in the number of requests received during the past two weeks for investigations of suspicious fires,” he says. “The State of Iowa is menaced but little by organized gangs of firebugs which are so active in some other States. Iowa has had but two large fires recentlythe Burtis Theatre at Davenport, with a loss of $125,000 and a $75,000 fire at Marshalltown. The Dafenport fire was the work of an escaped lunatic from the State Asylum. He has been caught and returned to the institution.”
The fire hazard will continue to abate with the warmer weather, Mr. Tracy says, and spring clearing will help reduce fire losses.
