Wildland crews continued to battle persistent fires in the West as firefighters around the nation geared up for the inevitable spate of fireworks-related injuries during the Fourth of July period. The fire service looked back in remembrance of some of its tragic history, including the anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire and Hackensack Ford Fire. And there were a few near misses this week, including two reported Maydays, one in Kentucky and another in New Hampshire. Below are just a few of this week’s significant firefighting stories.

Thousands Flee TN Train Derailment
A fire official said a 2-mile radius was evacuated around a train derailment and fire in eastern Tennessee. The train was carrying acrylonitrile, a hazardous material used in a variety of industrial processes.

Mayday at Deadly Louisville (KY) Fire
Two people were killed and several others injured, including a firefighter, during a large fire.

Seven Injured in NE Petroleum Center Explosion, Fire
An explosion and fire at a northeast Nebraska petroleum distribution center left seven people injured Wednesday, two of them critically, officials said.

The Burlington Fire Department said one of its firefighters was killed and another was injured in a car crash.

TN Child Dies in Fireworks Explosion
The 12-year-old child was playing with a tube, mortar-style firework when it went off at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday night on Lewis Street.

Taiwan Water Park Fire Ignites, Injuring More Than 500
More than 500 people were injured, almost 200 of them seriously, when a ball of fire ripped through a crowd at a water park outside Taiwan’s capital Taipei.
