Fire Threatens Business District
Fire, which did more than $100,000 damage, on Nov. 3 destroyed three markets and a bakery in the heart of the Pacific Grove, Calif., business district at Lighthouse and Forest Avenues. Soldiers from the nearby Presidio of Monterey and the nearby cities of Carniel-by-the-Sea and Monterey aided in the fight.
For a time, the fire threatened to destroy the entire block despite Herculean efforts of regular firemen and volunteers.
Pacific Grove lies west of Monterey and north of Carmel on a peninsula that juts into the Pacific Ocean. The entire district is lush with historical background. Several missions are nearby, as are the famed 17-Mile-Drive, Del Monte, Big Sur State Park. It is known as a paradise for sportsman, tourist, historian and vacationist.
