A female firefighter is suing the Providence (RI) Fire Department, saying she was discriminated against because of her gender and sexual orientation, among other issues.
The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/R4tHMo) that Lori Franchina, who is a lesbian, joined the department in 2002 and quickly rose in rank. She is suing the city, its fire department and the firefighters’ union in federal court.
Franchina complains that firefighters gave her an unflattering nickname, refused her orders and failed to provide assistance at emergency scenes.
