Firemen Celebrate Introduction of Two-Platoons
Firemen of Springfield, Ill., have been celebrating the introduction of the two-platoon system with a variety of diversions. The men at No. 1 engine house gave a genuine “Mulligan”, cooked by one of the company at which Chief Peter Jacobs was an honored guest. No. 4 engine house was somewhat more pretentious with a fullfledged banquet and the gayeties in general tended towards “Eats”. Gas stoves have been installed in the stations and tables for meals, as the members of each shift will eat all meals and sleep in the engine houses. Only a limited number will be allowed to leave Springfield on their days off, in case there should be a big fire when both shifts might be needed. By the new plan, each shift works twentyfour hours and has the next day off.
